All California vehicles catalytic converters will no longer be based upon gross vehicle weight and engine size. Direct application look-ups below are the only approved method for determining the correct part number for California vehicles. It is illegal in California to select a catalytic converter for installation based solely on vehicle weight, engine size, physical shape, size, flow rate, configuration or pipe diameter.

What Causes Smog Check Failure?

Catalytic converters are filtration elements that remove impurities like carbon monoxide from your vehicles exhaust. When catalytic converters go bad or become clogged, it effects your vehicles performance, fuel mileage and smog emissions levels. We carry a wide variety of OBD1 and OBD2 catalytic converters to accommodate most makes and models of vehicles, both import and domestic.

Oxygen sensors "sniff" your vehicles exhaust and tell your cars computer to adjust based on what they see. We can replace bad O2 sensors as well as repair or weld in new oxygen sensor bungs should your vehicle need them.

Mufflers are what we're known for. If your muffler has holes in it or you think you may have an exhaust leak we're here to help. We'll replace your old, rusted-out muffler with either a stock replacement or a performance muffler if you're looking for a deeper, more aggressive tone.

To make a long story short, my car fails CA smog every two years. I finally went to the Toyota dealership to get an answer once and for all as to why, and I was told I would need to replace my entire exhaust system with a quote of around $4K. Needless to say, I wasn't about to pay Toyota the value of my vehicle in exhaust repairs, so Toyota actually referred me to American Mufflers. It was the best decision ever to call and make an appointment.

Andy is hands-down the most honest and real person you're ever going to meet in the automotive industry. He did the exhaust repairs all by himself, bending, shaping, and measuring of the new pipes, and then welded everything back together. All of the work is done right there in the open for you to see for yourself. It really looked like more of an art form than any other car repair I have ever seen in the past. He helped me to pass smog all while not even coming close to what Toyota wanted to charge.

After years of going to multiple repair shops and getting second opinions and spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on diagnostics and repairs, I finally have a place where I will continue to bring my car for years to come.
